Top-seeded Grambling (17-13) overcame a slow start and a sluggish night of basketball to pull away late from MVSU (10-20) for a 71-61 victory and a spot in Friday’s SWAC semifinals.

Grambling plays Southern on Thursday in a SWAC semifinal game in Houston. No. 4 Southern upended No. 5 Alcorn State, 73-67, on Tuesday. Grambling and Southern split the season series. Grambling lost at home to Southern in February by a score of 71-68, and GSU won, 70-63, last month in Baton Rouge.


Ervin Mitchell scored 24 points, Remond Brown added 16, and Grambling State held off Prairie View 81-77 in Tuesday night’s Southwestern Athletic Conference quarterfinal.

The fifth-seeded Tigers (14-19) on Friday will face top-seeded Texas Southern (21-11), which beat Alabama State (8-23) 87-72 on Tuesday.

Texas Southern swept the season series from Grambling this season
